Stand by Me

I sang a solo today

You weren’t there to hear,

But in my mind

You sat in your usual spot

Smiling

I wasn’t nervous as I stood there

All eyes on me

Waiting for me to intone

The psalm

Sometimes it’s like that

I know that I’m alone up there

But I fell your presence

Walking not just with me,

But really with me

We’ve strode together for 52 years

A miracle!

We cried together, rejoiced together

Worried together

Stood in amazement looking at Yosemite Falls

Laughed at funny shows

Beamed with pride

As we held our newborn children

When they talked and walked

And graduated

We could sit back and relax

For we’ve walked the earth together

For so very long

But we don’t

Travel!

Where can we go next?

What marvels await?

What experiences intrigue?

As long as you’re there

Beside me

Walking with me

I will never be alone

Travels with My Husband

We love to see new things

Go places we’ve never seen before

Gape at amazing sights

Take countless photos

Spend time remembering

All we’ve seen

And where we’ve been

Feeling fulfilled

We never thought we’d travel

Had no money as we raised

Our family

Limited to camping in tents

Even so, we created memories

To last a lifetime

Snow in Yosemite

Rain in the Tetons

Cooking over a grill

Surrounded by knee-deep snow

Cooking by flashlight

Hoping to keep bears away

Now, our family is grown

Creating their own memories

Rafting in rivers

Kayaking in the ocean

Searching for waterfalls

Climbing over boulders

Fording streams

Backpacking or camping by van

All those years of making-do

Taught them to love

The outdoors, the thrill of the hunt

The ability to find joy everywhere

My trips now involve planes

Trains, cars and ships

I love visiting countries

Near and far

And when I return

I spend hours downloading

Photos so as to create

Memories

I might not sleep in the open

Under the stars

But I can see them as I walk the deck

I travel still

In my own way.
