Calling all Monsters

Calling all monsters, werewolves, and ghouls

Freaks, geeks, witches, skeletons, and fools

The hole is in the sky; stars shine through

Our time has come, our lives to renew.

Open the door, and out we will spill

Search for the goods, we must get our fill

Scare little kids who get in our way

No time to talk! It’s up and away.

Collect the best snacks, mixtures divine

Chocolate, peanuts, caramel fine

Blood red vines and peppermints to chew

Oh! Give me a sip of ice-cold brew

Tonight is the night of fun sublime

To get special treats, mountains we’ll climb

No time to practice our skills to hone

One, two, and three! Together we’ll moan

One night a year belongs to our crew

We gobble, wobble, then start anew

Time is running out.  Hurry we must.

Swallow! Don’t chew! Our stomachs to bust.

The night’s almost done, yet stars shine through

Halloween’s come, our strength to renew.

Especially for freaks, witches, fools

Skeletons, monsters, werewolves, and ghouls.

Mother’s Dreams

Mother, with hair tightly rag-wrapped

Settled in the recliner, napped

Dreams drifted to far-flung places

Filled with her relatives’ faces

Family friends passed in and out

Love scenes soaked with tremulous doubt

A new shape, unfocused, appeared

Walking and snarling, horror feared

Creature crazed by darkened deals

Upon the rack, its story reels

Angels intrude with halos worn

Arrive with blazing golden horn

Suddenly Mother does awake

Feeling fulfilled from her short break

Forgotten, threat of creature spawn

Instead aglow with love’s full dawn

Night Disturbances

Last night, a virtual parade

Promenaded through my tired brain

Stealing sleep like a pirate raid

Leaving me decidedly wane

Sense dulled by the midnight noise

Eyes red-rimmed like a circus fool

Death’s door beckons like children’s toys

Worried about next day at school

Fury propelled me from my bed

Like water gushing from a pipe

A flow of words inside my head

Weapons armed for a deadly swipe

Dragons swooped through darkened air

Flights of fancy in staccato beat

Threatening me with deep despair

Weakened, I accept true defeat

Carry me to thy private lair

Gently lay me on table bare

Rub silken ashes in my hair

Caress away every care

Worry me not with ebbing tide

Speak of romance deep and wide

Touch my soul burning red inside

Tonight I’ll be your special bride

    All things Must End

Dreamers navigate their way

through shadows deep and dark,

searching for the light of morning,

as they march across dry deserts

or over towering mountain peaks

crowned by heavenly angels

whose glittery gossamer wings

flutter fleetingly in a gentle breeze

brushing the sleeper’s cheek

as lightly as mother once did,

helping to climb the ladder

of delicious dreams toward

a blushing sky, streaked

orange, pink, and baby blue

as the sun, ever so slowly,

rises to greet the morning

shirking off terrifying nightmares

of hideous monsters, demons, sprites

or relishing romantic love stories

sung by twinkling firelight

in a lover’s embrace,

broken most unwillingly only

to greet the dawn of day,

without thinking, without choosing,

unable to stop the inevitable

awakening as all must for

dreamers’ dreams must end.

Fearful Memories

She came to her mother in the night

smelling of sweat, fear and sour breath

with hair tangled into miserable knots

crying about the monsters plaguing her dreams

which resembled all too closely

the boys who teased her mercilessly at school

even though Mom had complained to the teacher,

begging her to stop the torture.

The girl snuggled next to her mother’s side

head resting on the chest

arms tightly gripping her mother’s waist

and cried until all tears were gone.

her mom thought about sending her daughter

back to her own bed

back to the darkness where nightmares ran free,

but instead cradled her daughter and tried

to erase the painful memories.
